A surf weekend in Hossegor: spots, seasons and where to stay by the ocean

There are places where surfing is not an activity but the very rhythm of the day. Hossegor is one of them. On this ribbon of sand in the French Landes, the ocean delivers some of Europe’s most celebrated waves, and the beach fills at first light with black wetsuits heading for the water. If you’re after a weekend that smells of sea spray, neoprene and endless sunsets, here’s how to get it right — and where to rest your boards, just steps from the shore.

Why Hossegor is a world-class surf destination

Hossegor owes its reputation to a geological feature: the Gouf de Capbreton, an underwater canyon that focuses the swell and turns it, close to shore, into powerful, hollow beach breaks. The result is world-class waves that draw the professional surfing elite every autumn for the French stop of the world championship tour.

It all happens over a few hundred metres of beach:

  • La Gravière: the star wave — hollow and fast, for experienced surfers.
  • La Centrale and La Nord: more accessible peaks depending on the day.
  • Les Estagnots / Les Culs Nus (Seignosse side, just to the north): great alternatives when the central beach is crowded.

Good to know: these are beach breaks — the sandbank shifts with tides and storms. Check the morning marine forecast (swell, wind, tide) before paddling out.

When to come: the best season to surf

  • Autumn (September–November): the prime season. The first Atlantic swells arrive, the water is still mild and the summer crowds have gone.
  • Spring (April–June): often generous conditions and still-quiet resorts — ideal for a weekend.
  • Summer (July–August): a festive vibe and warm water, but a busy beach and line-up; aim for early morning or late afternoon.
  • Winter: powerful swells for seasoned surfers, with a thick wetsuit a must.

Whatever your level, several surf schools coach beginners and improvers on the beach — a smart move for a safe first session.

Beyond the waves: the Landes art of living

A weekend in Hossegor is about more than the water. Between sessions, you can wander the centre and the saltwater lake, hop from terrace to terrace, cycle along the ocean, and head to the nearby port of Capbreton for seafood and sunset (our favourite spot: La Petite Table, on the quai de la Pêcherie). As evening falls, the beach offers one of the finest sights on the coast: the sun sinking straight into the Atlantic.

Where to stay: the beach at your feet

The real luxury in Hossegor is proximity: grabbing your board and being in the water within minutes, then coming back to rinse off the salt without ever taking the car. That’s exactly what our two 4-star beachfront apartments on the central beach offer:

Both come with parking in the residence, a bike room and a storage cellar for boards (which aren’t allowed inside the apartment). Adjacent on the same floor, they’re perfect for a family or a group of friends who surf together.
