In Hossegor, the ocean has a calmer twin: the sea lake. A few minutes from the beach and from our apartments, it’s a sheet of water fringed with reed beds, pines and Belle Époque villas, where time seems to slow down. When the Atlantic roars, the lake simply shimmers. Here’s how to enjoy it — on foot, by bike, on a paddleboard, or simply lost in its reflections.

A unique lake, ruled by the tides

The Hossegor lake is no ordinary lake: it’s a sea lake, connected to the ocean by the Capbreton channel. It fills and empties with the tides, giving it that ever-changing water and the sandbanks revealed at low tide. This feature made its reputation: oyster farming has been practised here for generations, and its banks shelter remarkably rich wildlife and flora.

The lakeside loop, on foot or by bike

The great classic: the loop around the lake, a walk of about 7.5 km right by the water. The route, shaded in places, is dotted with interpretation panels on the wildlife, flora, oyster farming and local history — perfect for understanding what you’re looking at. Do it at a gentle walking pace (allow 1.5 to 2 hours) or by bike depending on the section. Our tip: set off at sunrise or in the late afternoon, when the light gilds the reed beds and the lake empties of its strollers.

Oysters, paddleboarding and lazing around

The lake is also an art of living. You sit down near the oyster huts for an oyster tasting by the water, rent a paddleboard or a kayak to glide over a surface far calmer than the ocean, and enjoy the lake’s little beaches, perfect for a family swim at high tide, away from the waves. It’s the dream spot for children and for anyone who prefers flat water.

When to go: the magic of the light

The lake can be enjoyed all year round, but it shows its finest faces in spring and autumn, when the light is low and the crowds are thin. At high tide, the water laps the banks and everything is reflection; at low tide, the sandbanks draw graphic landscapes. Check the day’s tide times to choose your mood.

A stone’s throw from your apartment

The luxury of Hossegor is having everything within walking distance: the ocean on one side, the lake on the other. From our 4-star beachfront apartments, you reach the lake on foot or by bike (the residence’s bike room is right downstairs) to combine, in the same day, a morning beach session and a lakeside loop at sunset.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim in the Hossegor sea lake?

Yes, in the designated areas and preferably at high tide, when the lake is full. The water is calmer and warmer than the ocean — ideal for families and young children.

How long does it take to walk around the lake?

The loop is about 7.5 km, so 1.5 to 2 hours at a gentle walking pace, less by bike. You can also do just a section, along the most beautiful banks.

Where can you taste oysters at the lake?

Around the lake, several oyster huts offer tastings by the water, especially on the Capbreton side and the southern banks. A must at sunset.
